This is quite possibly the coolest idea I’ve seen in a long time. Would love to sit down with whoever is funding this…

Many people living in Bangladesh’s impoverished villages haven’t yet been reached by technology. But a determined band of InfoLadies—young women equipped with netbooks, phones, and medical equipment—are delivering technology’s benefits to those people, one village at a time.

These villages—and the Bangladeshis who live in them—are held back in many ways merely by a scarcity of information. The InfoLadies are the bearers of that information. Their netbooks come preloaded with relevant content that can be easily translated to local languages, and their messenger bags carry items like blood pressure monitors and pregnancy kits. Says one InfoLady:

Ask me about the pest that’s infecting your crop, common skin diseases, how to seek help if your husband beats you or even how to stop having children, and I may have a solution.

It seems that they often do have solutions—while the young, modern InfoLadies were initially regarded as something of a “scandal,” they’re now welcomed enthusiastically by individuals looking to check their blood pressure or increase the yield of their crops. One man, hoping to find work in technology, used an InfoLady’s netbook to get a crash course on Microsoft Office. Before the InfoLadies arrived, he said, “I had only seen computers in books.”

via Gizmodo

It’s the kind of support and community partnership that can make huge change possible. That is the idea behind our 20$10 Campaign. Our aim is to partner together with people from every country on earth to make a difference in children’s education in Mongolia. With this worldwide support we will reach out and invest in the futures of children in some of the poorest and most isolated rural areas in Mongolia.

Our goal is to raise 2,000 $10 donations from supporters from all over the world.
Birch Grove Nature Preserve is an new initiative started by Edurelief in partnership with the Bugat soum goverment and Margad Deed Surguul of Erdenet City. The goal of this project is to teach local students and children about the importance of nature and forest protection and to promote community involvement in restoring at risk forest areas. The Bugat soum government has provide Edurelief with a large, at-risk piece of land just outside of Erdenet in an area which has been devastated by illegal logging, discarded garbage, and overgrazing. By using this project as an example, Edurelief aims to promote awareness of these issues to local students and community members and work together to preserve and restore damaged nature and forest areas near Erdenet, and around Mongolia.

Our goal is to raise $4,000 over the next 30 days from at least 50 unique donors which will kickstart our plan to start 10 new school libraries in rural Mongolia in 2010. Global Giving is a website dedicated to helping nonprofits such as ourselves create a stronger network of donors and connect them with corporate giving and matching donors. We were recently approved to take part in their March Open Challenge which selects nonprofits for permanent placement on their website and access to their fundraising toolsets and donor networks. It could prove a big boost to our fundraising for schools in Mongolia. To qualify for a permanent placement we need to raise $4,000 over the next 30 days from 50 unique donors. Please consider giving via our new Global Giving page and also spreading the word as much as you can. It’s worth noting that we experience these sorts of situations on a daily occurrence, it’s deeply embedded in society and daily life.

We’d like to introduce you to Ripley Davenport. We’ve been working hard on this program since the summer, partnering with a volunteer team from France to renovate the library room at the Baruunburen school, and bring in new library materials, shelves, a new laptop computer, and lots and lots of books.

Baruunburen is where everything began for us back in 2006 when we started our first school library project at the town’s public school. And now, three years later, we are proud to be able to complete a second project, this time at a smaller school serving nearly 200 students from poor families living in the town.

We’ve already had reports back from the school that the children’s interest in reading has greatly increased as they go through their new library and teachers are now able to give lessons from government approved textbooks instead of simply on blackboards. We are so proud of the students at this school and look forward to continuing to work with them in the coming years to help give this community a better future.

Many thanks to Capucine and her brother Aliocha, our youngest supporters who have awed us with their fundraising capabilities, raising enough funds for at least two school library programs. We’ll be completing their second project shortly at a 1st-9th grade school in a little town called Bugat (map).
